2015 Counoise

Production Notes

The 2015 Tablas Creek Vineyard Counoise is Tablas Creek’s sixth varietal bottling of this traditional blending grape from the Southern Rhone. The Counoise grape has an unusual combination of vibrant blue and purple fruit (blueberries and cranberries), sweet spice (nutmeg and cinnamon), light-to-medium body, bright acidity, ruby color, and soft tannin.

Our Counoise grapes were grown on our certified organic estate vineyard.  We typically use all this Counoise in our Esprit de Tablas and Côtes de Tablas wines. However, in years when Counoise spends an unusually long time on the vine, it achieves enough concentration to balance its exuberant fruit, spice and acidity.

The 2015 vintage saw dramatically reduced yields from the combined effects of four years of drought and cool, unsettled weather during May's flowering. Months alternated between significantly cooler than normal and significantly warmer than normal, which produced an early start to harvest but required multiple passes through most vineyard blocks during a long, drawn-out picking season.  Yields were down as much as 50% in early-ripening grapes like Syrah, while later grapes like Mourvedre were only down slightly.  The result was a vintage with excellent concentration but unusually good acids, and wines with dramatic aromas, texture, and intensity.  Our Counoise was harvested between September 26th and October 14th.

The Counoise grapes were destemmed and fermented in closed-top stainless steel fermenters using only native yeasts. After two weeks, the grapes were is pressed and moved to small neutral French oak barrels, where the wine was aged until it was bottled in April 2017.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Counoise shows a garnet hue, with a high-toned nose of pomegranate, shiso, red raspberry, mulling spices and orange peel. The mouth is tangy, medium-bodied, with cran-raspberry juiciness elevated further by brambly spice and refreshing acidity on the finish. Drink this wine now and for the next five years.

Harvest Festival Wine Weekend

Oct 20th-22nd, 2017
Celebrate Paso Robles Harvest Wine Weekend with Tablas Creek. Join us in the tasting room all weekend for a first look at our flagship wines from the 2015 vintage: 2015 Esprit de Tablas and 2015 Esprit de Tablas Blanc. We will also of course have open a range of small-production treats. If you’re interested in an in-depth exploration of the property, tours will run daily at 10:30am and 2:00pm (except Saturday *see below*) and reservations are recommended.

On Saturday, join us in the cellar at Tablas Creek for a series of interactive harvest cellar tours throughout the day, led by our Winemakers. Guests on these tours will sample wines in various stages of the winemaking process and learn about the 2017 harvest and winemaking at Tablas Creek. Tours will be offered 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30, are limited to 20 guests per tour, and are free to all guests. Reservations are highly recommended. Also, we’ll have live music by the incredibly talented Noach Tangeras band playing Americana style folk tunes from noon to 3:00pm.

Grapes of the Rhone Valley: Picardan

Wednesday morning, we bottled our tiny (70 case) production of Picardan. What's the big deal? Well, this grape is one of the rarest in the world, with a total footprint of only a couple of acres. And this bottling is likely the first 100% Picardan -- made anywhere -- in a century or more, given its general application as a blending grape. It's so rare that we're working really without a road map; even our Perrin partners don't vinify it on its own.
