2014 Marsanne

Production Notes

The 2014 Tablas Creek Vineyard Marsanne is Tablas Creek’s fourth varietal bottling of Marsanne, the noble white grape of France’s Hermitage appellation. We use most of our Marsanne in our Côtes de Tablas Blanc each year. However, in 2014 we felt that the Marsanne was so complete and compelling, and so representative of the Marsanne grape, that we selected out two lots for a single-varietal bottling.

The grapes for our 2014 Marsanne were grown on our certified organic estate vineyard.

The 2014 vintage was our third consecutive drought year and saw our earliest-ever beginning to the growing season.  The summer was warm but without serious heat spikes, and our coolest August in a decade slowed ripening at a critical period. When it warmed back up in September, the fruit tumbled in, and we finished in mid-October, about two weeks earlier than normal.  The result was a vintage with excellent concentration balanced by good freshness, which should be vibrant and powerful young, but with the balance to age.  Our Marsanne was harvested between September 16th and 19th. 

The Marsanne was whole cluster pressed, and fermented in a mix of stainless steel (to emphasize its clean crisp flavors and minerality) and foudre (to build body and richness). Only native yeasts were used. After fermentation, the wine was racked and blended, and bottled in June 2015. The wine underwent only a light cold stabilization before bottling.

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Marsanne has a pretty pale gold color, with a surprisingly tropical nose of fresh pineapple and lychee, baked apples, lemongrass and wet rocks. The mouth is pretty and composed, notably saline, with apple skin and candied lemon peel flavors that soften and broaden into a long, gentle finish with echoes of soft minerality. It should drink well for at least the next five years, likely longer.

2007 Horizontal Tasting

At this horizontal tasting (horizontal referring to tasting several wines from a single estate made in a single year, as opposed to vertical, which would imply a tasting of the same wine across several vintages) you can join us as we look back at 2007 with the perspective of ten years’ time. Spreading our love to the Paso Robles community

WIn celebration of Valentine’s Day and as a way to share our love for our community, the Tablas Creek team came together to clean, organize and donate playground toys to benefit the children at the Boys & Girls Club in Paso Robles. Eleven of us (from the cellar, tasting room and office) met early in the morning and spent three hours there working on projects too time consuming for the club to manage in their day-to-day operations.
