Rainbow over Tablas Creek

Decanter reports on rain in California wine country

Decanter's US Editor Clive Pursehouse speaks to our Jason Haas as a part of his report on the impact of the recent rains on California's wine country, and included photos taken during and after the rain by Director of Winemaking Neil Collins. From Jason's report:

‘The rains here were nothing but good news,’ Haas said. ‘We got about 15cm spread over a week, and that pushes us up to about 45cm for the year. That’s about 125% of normal for this date. It’s late enough in the winter season that the cover crops are very well established, and there was no erosion or any negative impacts whatsoever.’

Owen Bargreen Esprit Vertical Feb2024

Esprit de Tablas Vertical Tasting on OwenBargreen.com

On a recent visit to Tablas Creek, we shared a mini-vertical tasting of our Esprit de Beaucastel and Esprit de Tablas red with reviewer Owen Bargreen. This vertical tasting spanned six bottles over 20 years, starting with our first-ever 2000 and finishing with the 2020. In a recent report, Owen had this to say about the experience:

Originally named ‘Esprit de Beaucastel’ for their partnership with Chateau de Beaucastel, the name was switched more than a decade ago to ‘Esprit de Tablas’ reflecting that this is a tour de force, stand alone wine from Paso Robles. The ‘Esprit’ has become one of the quintessential California Rhone-inspired wines — and wine that consistently over-delivers for the price and deftly captures the art of blending almost unlike any other red wine in its state.

2021 Esprit de Tablas Blanc: #11 Wine of 2023 (Owen Bargreen)

In his annual "Top 100 Wines of the Year" post, Dr. Owen Bargreen included the 2021 Esprit de Tablas Blanc:

The beautiful 2021 Esprit Blanc de Tablas, is another world-class release of this wine. This edition has considerably more Roussanne (70%) than the 2020 bottling. This varietal is really shining brightly here, with its hedonistic bent and plenty of body. Wet gravel notes combine with ripe cantaloupe, juicy peach and suggestions of salted Brazil nuts. With a refined texture, wait for the near minute-long finish. Astonishingly good in its youth, this beauty will live on for another fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2023-2040 - 96 points
